The Salesman wins ARRI/OSRAM Award at Munich Film Festival

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Munich) – The Iranian movie "The Salesman" has been selected by an independent jury to win the ARRI/OSRAM Award for Best International Film at the 34th Munich Film Festival, and with it a prize of goods and services worth EUR 50,000. Besides sponsoring the award, ARRI supported its hometown film festival in many other ways.

11 movies from the CineMasters Selection competed this year for the prestigious ARRI/OSRAM Award, with the jury consisting of actress Pegah Ferydoni, producer Stéphane Tchalgadjieff and Munich’s former mayor Christian Ude. ARRI has sponsored the award since 2008, with OSRAM joining as co-sponsor in 2013.

The jury unanimously awarded the ARRI/OSRAM Award to "The Salesman", by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi – “a film we found contemporary and yet universal,” explained jury member Stéphane Tchalgadjieff. The story revolves around a woman whose life changes dramatically after she and her husband move to a new apartment and traces of the previous tenant’s dubious lifestyle start infiltrating the couple’s world. “It’s a film about who we are and who we could be as human beings,” noted Tchalgadjieff at the award ceremony.

"The Salesman" was captured with ARRI ALEXA XT cameras by cinematographer Hossein Jafarian. His visuals played a crucial role in the film, which picked up two awards earlier in the year at Cannes: Best Screenplay and Best Male Performance.

Franz Kraus of the ARRI Executive Board and Michael Willacker, Head of Professional and Industrial Applications at OSRAM, presented the ARRI/OSRAM Award at the grand ceremony at Carl-Orff-Saal. The jury also gave a special mention to Amos Gitai’s film "Rabin, the Last Day", which documents the final day in the life of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was shot in Tel Aviv in 1995.

ARRI’s participation in the 34th Munich Film Festival went beyond sponsoring an award at the closing event. ARRI Rental provided the lighting for the red carpets and photo call walls at the cinemas and the festival center at the Gasteig, while postproduction and creative services subsidiary ARRI Media was responsible for color grading and delivery of the film festival trailer, among other things.

Alongside the Munich Film Festival, the Erich Pommer Institute (EPI) held its international co-production program Trans Atlantic Partners (TAP) 2016. 25 experienced independent producers from Europe, Canada, the US, India and South Africa were chosen to participate. TAP provides a unique combination of advanced training, effective networking between prospective co-production partners and purposeful feedback from experts.

As a TAP partner, ARRI was excited to invite the international producers to a presentation at ARRI@Bavaria Film on June 27. Participants got an overview of current ARRI equipment such as the ALEXA 65 and ALEXA Mini cameras and SkyPanel lights, but also of the image and audio postproduction services offered by ARRI Media. Impressive demonstrations were given of VFX editing as well as ARRI’s Dolby Atmos sound studio and Dolby Vision grading cinema – the only such facility outside of Hollywood.
