What is Ensō?

ARRI Ensō lenses are named after, and inspired by, a circular Zen symbol. In Zen calligraphy, painting an ensō is a meditative practice that trains your mind to exist fully in the moment. You are engaged with your surroundings, but your thoughts are untroubled by anything beyond the act of creation.

This is an ideal state of mind on set, and it is only possible if you have complete trust in your tools.

Beautiful native look

Natural image detail and stunning bokeh
Exquisite close-ups and well-controlled flares
Gentle focus fall-off and minimal breathing

I loved the Ensō Primes. The sharpness was perfect; the roll-off and bokeh were soft and smooth. The light weight and small size of the lenses made handheld shots easy. I loved the crazy close-focus distance and—most of all—the price point makes them a very appealing option.

The Ensō Primes were an ideal choice for our project. Their lightweight build and flexibility were crucial on such a demanding shoot. Whether on the high seas, wind battered land,  or in studio interiors, the Ensō lenses delivered exceptional performance, perfectly complementing our vision.

ARRI Ensō lenses blend a naturalistic look with a high-end commercial feel, all in a nimble package at an approachable price point. They have a polished yet intimate resolve, free from sterility or artifice. Their small footprint makes operating remotely or in tight places a breeze.

Elegant simplicity

Collaborating with a leading Japanese optics house, ARRI designed the Ensō lens series to deliver incredible image quality across a huge range of focal lengths, from 10.5 to 250 mm (350/500 mm with Ensō Extenders). Combining German engineering with Japanese optical excellence, Ensōs are a fusion of two cultures – adaptable and reliable, yet elegantly simple and pure of purpose.

Ensō Vintage Elements

Create diverse vintage looks with a single lens set
Adapt bokeh and fall-off to your creative needs
Quick and easy external lens tuning, with metadata

We used the Ensōs clean for present-day scenes and then with the 350N Vintage Element to get a dreamy, vintage feel for scenes set in the past. With one set of lenses, we achieved distinct visual approaches for each time period while maintaining consistent contrast, skin tone, and texture.

As a Steadicam operator, I really value the compact form factor of the Ensō Prime lenses. The new Ensō Vintage Elements system surprised me with its many creative possibilities; a new way to achieve the look you are looking for.

We used the 200N Ensō Vintage Element predominately to make the viewer feel like they were being sucked into the intense world of our hero, then switched to the 200P when our character has a change of heart and mind, as the image needed to feel more harmonious and painterly.

Interchangeable rear optics

Building on what ARRI has learned from feedback about its Impression Filters for Signature lenses, Ensō Vintage Elements incorporate significant advantages. They come in more powerful strengths, producing images that are sharper in the center and therefore easier to focus, but with a stronger detuned effect at the edges of frame.

They have encoded chips that convey metadata about shifts of focal length, T-stop, and focus to the camera, and from there to on-set monitors and postproduction. Focus scale changes caused by the Elements can be compensated for automatically with the ARRI Hi‑5 hand unit, even if crews decide not to use the included lens shims.

Lenses that say "yes"

Whether on a conventionally lit set or on fast-moving, lower-tier productions shot by small crews with minimal lighting, Ensō lenses can be relied upon to produce engaging, well-controlled images. Careful balancing of myriad technical parameters allows the lenses to say “yes” to the varied requirements of every end user, at any stage of their journeys.

Exceptional close focus

1:4 magnification ratio on most focal lengths
Extreme close-ups without macros or diopters
Shallow depth of field directs audience attention

These lenses are so unique. When shooting a subject super-close, almost at the pin, there isn't any image breathing when racking focus. That's unheard of with any other close-focus lenses I have ever used.

At last, there is a consistent prime lens set that is calculated for digital sensors and enables close focus settings across all focal lengths. If you want different looks, you can create your optical preferences from a variety of rear Vintage Elements. Ingenious!

Making ARRI quality more accessible

Choosing Ensōs is about making a safe, long-term investment in lenses that will be versatile and trustworthy career companions. Putting ARRI quality within the reach of corporate shoots, documentaries, and commercials that cannot afford big budgets or crews, Ensō lenses protect and enable their users, allowing them to develop, grow, and go with the creative flow.

Fast and flexible on set

Compact and lightweight form factor
Perfect for small crews and small spaces
95 mm fronts and uniform gear rings

I’ve been shooting with the Signature Primes, which I love, and I needed something to run along with these that was more compact for handheld and stabilized work. The Ensōs were perfect; they are great right across the frame, with good close focus, nice flare characteristics, and a slightly vintage feel. I love them.

The compact size and versatility of the Ensō lenses let us work in very tight spaces such as a car interior or inside a splash bag in the sea. Focal length changes were fast, as the rings are in the same position across the entire lens set, so we didn’t have to reposition the motors for each lens.

I prefer to have a small, concise camera kit and lens package. I was shooting on a Steadicam and I loved that the Ensō lenses were small, with similar weights. I didn’t have to think twice about making lens changes in a small window of light because there was no re-balancing required.

Compatibility of Ensō lenses

ARRI Ensō lenses are equipped with the LPL (Large Positive Locking) lens mount. A wider diameter and shorter flange focal depth allow LPL lenses to be small and lightweight, with a fast T-stop and pleasing bokeh—a combination of features that would not be possible with the old PL lens mount. Careful testing is required when using Ensō Vintage Elements with third-party LPL mounts.
