Announced in 1992, with shipments beginning in 1993, the ARRIFLEX 16SR 3 was a major upgrade of the SR and SR 2 cameras that had been in use since 1975. The SR 3 could shoot in the Super 16 format and its PL mount accepted a wide variety of lenses.
A high-speed model was offered, doubling the frame rate to 150 fps, and in 1999 the SR 3 Advanced was released, with a 70% brighter viewfinder, ARRIGLOW, updated video assist, and interfaces for modern ARRI accessories. A new film guide with sapphire rollers improved steadiness, while an optimized movement facilitated smoother and quieter operation.
