Robert “Bob” Arnold, former co-owner of ARRI and a pivotal figure in modern film technology, passed away in his hometown of Munich last Wednesday, May 7. He was the son of Dr. August Arnold, co-founder of ARRI, one of the world’s most influential film equipment manufacturers. The Stahl family, ARRI’s Management Board, and many long-standing company advisors have already extended heartfelt condolences.
Born in Munich, Bob Arnold charted an independent course early in life, choosing not to immediately enter the family business. He pursued a degree in industrial engineering and co-founded Weishäupl GmbH with university friend Oskar Weishäupl. The company became a European leader in premium garden furniture, a testament to Bob Arnold’s business acumen and passion for design.
In 1983, Bob Arnold returned to ARRI and joined its management, helping transform the company from a national brand into a global force in cinema technology. Under his leadership, ARRI’s revenue surged from 50 million to 400 million Deutsche Marks by the year 2000. His tenure coincided with several key innovations, including technologies that garnered multiple Academy Awards for technical achievement.
In 2012, after decades at the helm, Bob Arnold sold his 50% stake in ARRI to the Stahl family. This marked the end of the Arnold family’s direct involvement with the company, closing a chapter that had spanned generations. After retirement, Bob Arnold remained active in various ventures, including his ongoing role with Weishäupl GmbH. Until his death, he resided in Munich’s Bogenhausen district.
Bob Arnold is remembered not only for his contributions to cinema but also for his intellect, independent spirit, and devotion to craftsmanship across industries. He leaves behind a legacy woven into the history of film and design. He is survived by his daughter, Laura and her family.
