In memoriam: Otto Nemenz—A lifelong ally to the art of cinematography

Celebrating the legacy of a visionary who shaped camera technology and supported generations of filmmakers.

Nov. 5, 2025

It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that ARRI marks the passing of Otto Nemenz—a pioneer whose work shaped modern cinematography and whose warmth and generosity touched many.

Born in Austria and trained as an engineer, Otto began his career in humble roles before founding Otto Nemenz International in Los Angeles in 1979. His company became a benchmark for camera and lens rental, known for meticulous service and innovation.

Celebrated as the industry’s “Pope of Camera Lending,” Otto received major awards, including the ASC Technical Achievement Award and Cine Gear’s Legacy Lifetime Achievement Award. Yet, his true legacy was his mentorship and kindness. As Walter Trauninger, former Managing Director at ARRI and Otto’s companion on his cinematography journey for many decades, noted: “Otto was a true living legend—a teacher, mentor, and friend.”

Otto’s presence was encouraging and practical. He listened, shared his experience, and inspired others to excel. His emphasis on quality and service reinforced ARRI’s values and elevated the creative process for countless filmmakers.

We extend heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and the many whose careers he influenced. Otto was more than a customer—he was a partner and advocate.

May his memory continue to inspire excellence and care in the craft of making images.

In sorrow,
The entire ARRI Team
