ALEXA Cameras Overview
Since the moment it was launched, ALEXA has had a profound impact on the industry, redefining the limits of digital motion picture capture with efficient workflows and incredible image quality. Adoption of the system has been widespread and swift, with the cameras now in use on every possible type of production, from episodic TV shows, documentaries and commercials to feature films of all budgets and prestigious, international drama series.
The ALEXA platform is the most complete digital camera system ever built, with different camera models for everyday shooting as well as specialty applications and a close integration with ARRI's wide range of mechanical accessories and electronic, cabled and wireless accessories. ALEXA's versatile and efficient workflows provide the easiest way to get quality images from the set into post. Through long product cycles and a range of upgrades ARRI protects their customer's investment in ALEXA.
More than ever before, ALEXA offers the best overall image quality with the SXT cameras. For content producers that are increasingly concerned about compatibility with next-generation standards for deliverables and displays, there is no better choice than ALEXA SXT. By striking a perfect balance between pixel size and resolution, ALEXA SXT is able to produce beautiful images in HD, 2K and 4K, while also delivering the highest dynamic range of any camera on the market, with 16 bit in-camera processing. It is therefore uniquely suited to the creation of content for emerging HDR (High Dynamic Range) display technologies. Since ALEXA SXT records a WCG (Wide Color Gamut) signal larger than any current displays can show, its images are ready for new color space standards like Rec 2020. In addition, the ability to record at up to 120 fps in full image quality means that HFR (High Frame Rate) approaches to enhancing viewer experience can also be easily accommodated.
ALEXA's reliability, simplicity of operation, as well as unequalled workflow efficiency and versatility ensures lowest overall production costs.
ALEXA SXT Cameras
Third generation ALEXAs, released in 2016, are called ALEXA SXT cameras (Super Xtended Technology). While keeping the sensor and user interface of the original ALEXA design, the capabilities of ALEXA SXT cameras have been greatly extended. Equipped with the powerful electronics and sophisticated image processing of the ALEXA 65, SXT cameras can manage more recording formats and handle more processor-intensive tasks such as calculating looks with 3D LUTs or color space conversions to Rec 2020, all in real time. Building on work done originally for the ALEXA Mini and AMIRA, the new ARRI look management and optional noise reduction help creative filmmakers get their ideas across. And last but not least, the new media bay can accept a wide range of media, as well as the new, high-performance SXR Capture Drives. ALEXA SXT cameras are the ALEXA SXT EV, ALEXA SXT Plus and ALEXA SXT Studio. The SXR Module is on the left side of the camera. It has one slot for either the XR Adapter for use with an XR Capture Drive, the SXR Adapter for use with an SXR Capture Drive, the SxS Adapter 2 for use with one SxS PRO or SxS PRO+ card or the CFast 2.0 Adapter 2 for use with one CFast 2.0 card.
A tall sensor for anamorphic shooting, in-camera ARRIRAW recording up to 120 fps, 14 recording formats, ARRI look management, super flexible on-set monitoring, ARRI Lens Data System, improved image quality, single speed mode, a new media bay and new, high-performance drives - what's not to love?
The Swiss Army knife of cameras: all the features of the ALEXA SXT EV, plus built-in wireless remote control of camera and lens motors, tilt/roll sensors, electronic horizon and additional connectors for remote control, video output and accessory power.
All the features of the ALEXA SXT Plus, but with a film-style optical viewfinder, rotating mirror shutter and motorized ND filter slider.
An upgrade path from previous generation cameras (ALEXA XT EV, ALEXA XT Plus and ALEXA XT Studio) is provided to full SXT functionality to protect customer's investment in ALEXA cameras. Owners who received ALEXA XT EV, ALEXA XT Plus and ALEXA XT Studio cameras in 2015 or 2016 are eligible for a free upgrade to SXT or, alternatively, they can purchase an SXT camera at a substantially reduced price.
ALEXA Mini is a versatile additional tool in the ARRI ALEXA camera range, combining a compact and lightweight form factor with the same unparalleled image quality that has made ALEXA a gold standard for the industry. Designed for specialized shots and for working with gimbals and drones, the ALEXA Mini perfectly complements a full ALEXA shooting kit and allows crews to keep everything within a single system. To maintain ARRI's famously rugged build quality in such a small camera body, unique design solutions such as environmentally sealed electronics, a lightweight carbon housing and a solid titanium PL mount have been incorporated. Nimble in use and hardy on set, ALEXA Mini can be operated by wireless remote control, as a normal camera with the ARRI MVF-1 multi viewfinder attached, or with an on-board monitor and controlled via the camera’s user button interface.
Compact, lightweight and self-contained, yet capturing the same image quality as other ALEXA models, the Mini is ideal for gimbal mounts, drones and helicopters, as well as underwater, car, action and 3D shoots.
ALEXA XT Cameras
Second generation ALEXAs are called ALEXA XT cameras (Xtended Technology). They were released between 2013 and 2016. In addition to all the features of the ALEXA Classic cameras, they are equipped with a Super 35 sensor (with Open Gate and 4:3 sensor modes), in-camera ARRIRAW up to 120 fps, ProRes 4444 XQ, ProRes 3.2K, internal ND filter, Lens Data System, integrated CDL capture and ARRIRAW checksum. In addition, they have a new viewfinder mounting bracket, include anamorphic de-squeeze and high speed licenses as well as a new, super silent fan. ALEXA XT cameras are the ALEXA XT, ALEXA XT Plus, ALEXA XT M and ALEXA XT Studio. The XR Module is on the left side of the camera. It has one slot for either an XR Capture Drive, the SxS Adapter for use with one SxS PRO or SxS PRO+ card or the CFast 2.0 Adapter for use with one CFast 2.0 card.
ALEXA Classic Cameras
First generation ALEXAs are called ALEXA Classic cameras. They were released between 2010 and 2012. They have exceptional image performance and are simple to operate, reliable in the most extreme environments and versatile enough to cover a wide range of workflows and budgets. They will empower you to tell your story with pictures of breathtaking richness and detail. ALEXA Classic camera models are the ALEXA, ALEXA Plus, ALEXA Plus 4:3, ALEXA M, ALEXA Studio, ALEXA HD and ALEXA HD Plus. The ALEXA HD and HD Plus are the basis for the ALEXA Fiber Remote and Fiber Remote Plus camera sets. All ALEXA Classic cameras are equipped with an SxS Module located on the left side of the camera with two slots for SxS PRO or SxS PRO+ cards.
ALEXA Classic cameras can be upgraded with the XR Module and other parts for most of the features of ALEXA XT cameras except Open Gate sensor mode.
Where it all began: The classic ALEXA with its 16:9 sensor is compact and affordable, with ultra-fast workflows and image quality akin to 35 mm film.
An upgrade for ALEXA Classic cameras that replaces the SxS Module with the XR (Xtended Recording) module. The XR module provides in-camera ARRIRAW recording up to 120 fps, compatibility with XR Capture Drives and CFast 2.0 cards, faster ProRes and DNxHD frame rates and longer recording times.
