Macro Exposure Guides When undertaking macro photography, the laws of optics dictate that an increase in aperture is required to maintain exposure. The increase needed is less than 1/4 of a stop until the magnification ratio reaches 1:8 (image size:object size). After this the effect becomes more apparent.

The guides for exposure compensation have been produced so that magnification ratio is measurable. They also show an approximation to the corresponding increase in aperture required to maintain exposure. While the magnification is easily measured, the exposure increase is actually dependant on the T-stop that the lens is set to. This means that the values for exposure increase are approximations only and this should be remembered when using the charts.
