ARRIMOTION System Extended

Product Image

Motion Control doesn´t have to be complicated or costly ? that´s the idea behind the ARRIMOTION system. Up to now, this was true for shots with the ARRIHEAD on a tripod. Now ARRIMOTION becomes more open and mobile:

  • The new Dolly Drive controls the Panther Evolution Dolly.
  • Encoded fluidheads can be connected through the Jogbox Cable Adapter JCA-2.
  • The new software (release 2.0) offers further creative possibilities.

The Dolly Drive

As the result of a collaboration with Panther, the Evolution Dolly is now an integrated part of the ARRIMOTION System. The dolly´s up/down movement (booming) and foreward/reverse movement (tracking) can be recorded and exactly repeated with thigh precision.

According to the ARRIMOTION concept of easy usability, no complex programming is necessary. The familiar controls can be used: the Panther up/down joystick feeds back to the ARRIMOTION for booming. Tracking is controlled by a pressure sensitive push bar, which replaces the normal push bar.

A dial on the push bar sets the sensitivity which in turn adjusts the amount of inertia simulated by the system when pushing the dolly. This way the dolly grip feels like pushing a normal dolly, despite the fact that it is really the drive motor of the ARRIMOTION system which controls the movement at any moment. The height of the push bar can be adjusted to accomodate any setup. The Dolly uses combi wheels on Panther Precision Tracks MK2.

Once a Panther Evolution dolly has been modified to accept the ARRIMOTION system, the switch from motion control dolly to manual dolly can be made in a few simple steps, providing an extra level of flexibility for the rental house.

On request the Dolly Drive can be customized on short notice, e.g. with

  • cable guide rail for power, control and video cable
  • speed increase for unmanned operation
  • adaptation for curved tracks

The dolly modification consists of the following components:

  • integration of electronic for the Panther Evolution Dolly
  • tracking drive
  • control electronic with motor control and safety features
  • tooth belt and track end section
  • pressure sensitive push bar
  • complete set of cables

The Jogbox Cable Adapter JCA-2 and the Jogbox Cradle

Since it is not always possible or desirable to move the camera directly, there are various ways to remotely move the camera that is on the ARRIMOTION system. One of those is provided by the Jogbox Handwheel Controller JHC-1, which is a remote control station with hand wheels, duplicating the feel of a geared head. With the Jogbox Cable Adapter JCA-2 it is now also possible to control the ARRIMOTION system remotely from an encoded fluid head, e.g. the CAMS System by Movie Engineering.

Three input receptacles connect the encoders for pan, tilt and roll on a fluid head to the JCA-2. The Jogbox can be mounted to the head´s pan handle rosette with an adapter and the Jogbox Cradle. This adapter provides two rosettes, one for the pan handle and one for the Jogbox Cradle. Different adapters are available for different fluid heads.

New ARRIMOTION SW Release 2.0 Software Version 2.0 of the ARRIMOTION System makes numerous new features available: Speed Ramps with the 435 Advanced Through implementation of the CAN Bus interface in the 435 Advanced, the camera can now be remote controlled frame accurately. The new software makes it possible to shoot frame accurate speed ramps with shutter compensation. Start and end speed can be programmed as well as the maximum allowed ramp speed. During shooting the speed can be changed with any input device of the ARRIMOTION system that has been assigned to do speed control. The speed ramp is either recorded simultaneously with the camera move or afterwards. This way it is easy to accomplish different versions of a camera move and combine them with speed ramps.

Stop and Go Motion with the 435 Advanced For time-lapse and single-frame, the 435 Advanced and the Integrated Capping Shutter are controlled by the ARRIMOTION system to match the recorded move exactly to the preset time lapse duration. To do this, the ARRIMOTION system takes over complete control of process and exposure. A sequence can either run automatically with single frames exposed at preset intervals, or each exposure can be triggered manually, e.g. for animation or effect sequences.

To achieve the impression of motion blur, it is not only possible to do Stop Motion but also Go Motion, where the camera is moved during exposure to add motion blur, just like in a live action shoot. In post production, single frame sequences can be easily combined with live actions shoots.

Extended Trigger Possibilities

To synchronize ARRIMOTION with other systems on the set, the following features have been implemented:

  • Timecode IN and OUT through the CCB Timecode connector. The system can be triggered with SMPTE Timecode at 24, 25 and 30 fps and can output timecode for other devices, like lighting consoles and timecode slates.
  • Up to four CPI trigger boxes can be connected to the system. Each trigger box provides up to eight relays for triggering on external events.
  • As a signal for actors and other crew members, blooplights can be programmed to display different colors and shapes for any frame.
  • For synching audio and video with the ARRIMOTION, a recorder is controlled through the Sony Control 1? interface on the CCB-1. This feature is especially useful during pop promo productions or other applications involving sychronized playback. Also available are a cable and a distibution box which split up the SER-2 interface on the CCB into VTR and Blooplight/GPI Triggerbox.

Numerous improvements and customer requests have been worked into the new software release as well.
