Daviau's Digital Doubts

Note: Reprinted with kind permission from The IBC Daily News 2004.

Allen Daviau, whose five Oscar nominations include "The Color Purple" and "Empire of the Sun", put a magical case for keeping film alive as a shooting medium at ibc, based in part on his experiences of shooting Van Helsing on Kodak’s 5218 stock and taking it through a digital intermediate finish at EFilm.

Following an incredible set if insights into the DI process – “One of the joys is that you are able to blend things together in a way you never have had before” – he made the case for film dailies and judging digital acquisition for what it is.

“The studios push and push digital dailies, and don’t want film dailies. But they are a necessity, particularly when finishing in DI,” he said. “One of the things that is essential for the cinematographer is to know what’s on the negative he is exposing. Digital dailies are not there yet, and the people operating try to do too much for you.”

With regard to acquisition, Daviau said, “We are going to be in a hybrid medium for some time but the information that’s on a negative is extraordinary, and you are not going to achieve that for some time digitally. People will rush to use digital cameras not for the right reasons.”
