Dear Readers,
The end of 2006 is quickly approaching, and what a year it’s been for ARRI filmmakers. We’ve witnessed a roll-out of new productions shot using the Master Primes like Babel, The Departed and now Rocky Balboa. You can read an extended version of our interview with Cinematographer Clark Mathis on shooting Sylvester Stallone in his latest role as the underdog boxer.
We’ve also seen the D-20’s debut on the U.S. West Coast with commercials shot by Bengt Jönsson. Read below to learn about Jönsson’s experience with the film-style digital camera along with thoughts from Digital Imaging Technician Michele de Lorimier.
Directed by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run), Perfume: Story of a Murderer is receiving rave reviews. Not only was Perfume filmed with ARRI camera equipment and lights rented from ARRI Rental in Munich, but processing, scanning on the ARRISCAN, digital intermediate and film out on the ARRILASER were all done at ARRI Film & TV Services. Read below for what Tykwer had to say about this period thriller produced end-to-end on ARRI.
Aside from being on movie sets, ARRI’s reach expanded to the deserts of Las Cruces, New Mexico where the ARRIMAX HMI/PAR was used to power entries in the Wirefly X Prize Space Elevator competition. The same fixture that was used to light up the night sky on Mission Impossible 3 was also used to power a solar energy transporter 50 meters into the sky! This versatility and intensity of the ARRIMAX was acknowledged earlier this fall with the honor of a cinec award, as was our newly introduced ARRIFLEX 416 camera.
As another year ends, we look forward to many good things in store for the next one. 2007 marks ARRI’s 90th birthday as the world’s largest motion picture equipment manufacturer and already we’ve received word that in January, the Society of Camera Operators will honor us with a Technical Achievement Award for the ARRIFLEX D-20, 416, 235 cameras; Ultra 16 and Arri/Zeiss Master Prime Lenses.
We look forward to celebrating the new year and wish you all the best.
Happy Holidays from your friends at ARRI.
