City TV studio gets makeover with ARRI LEDs
Lighting Designer James Downey (SUPER BOWL XLIV, HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA) chose ARRI L-Series and SkyPanel fixtures to upgrade the lighting system at Rogers Media’s new studio in Toronto. With the tremendous output of ARRI LED’s light engine and full flexibility of color control, the studio is better equipped to produce more news-style shows throughout the day.
Rogers Media’s City studio in Toronto has updated their lighting system with ARRI SkyPanels and L-Series fixtures. The studio is constantly in production broadcasting live shows daily, such as CITYLINE, CITYNEWS and TODAY. The redesigned set-up debuted in September 2017.
When City moved to a new 40’’ x 80’’ space, Downey, Rogers’ go-to lighting expert for years, was approached to revamp their lighting system. The studio is outfitted with large windows overlooking the great view on Yonge-Dundas Square. One of the greatest challenges Downey had to face was to color balance the ambient light coming from the windows. Downey used L7 Fresnels as the key lighting, L5s for the backlight and SkyPanel S60-Cs to create a broad, controllable wash.
“I wanted to go fully LED to eliminate both the heat issue and also, to have full color control throughout the day. The beauty of LED is that it allows you to retain lower light output while maintaining a desired color temperature. There are multiple news-style shows produced at the studio throughout the day. You go through the whole color gamut: from dusk, afternoon daylight, magic hour and past sunset. We can easily adjust LED output to match the color balance outside at any time of the day,” noted Downey.

“Rogers Media is an environment-friendly company; therefore, choosing fixtures that can save electricity down the road was one of my priorities. They thought tremendously forward and made an investment that is good for the talent and for everyone else in Canada,” says Downey.

States Downey: “I have my own lighting company, Fullerton Productions, and I sell what I’ve used. ARRI has been my go-to fixtures for Fresnel and HMI over the years, and now for LED. I installed ARRI lights in studios that did not know ARRI existed. ARRI is the best. I know that ARRI’s fixtures will last the longest and provide the best control.”
