ARRISCAN featuring Hoverscan

The ARRISCAN offers various solutions when working with problematic film material.
When scanning film material that is in a delicate condition (shrunken, brittle or damaged), the ARRISCAN registration pin can be retracted. Mechanical pin registration, however, delivers the steadiest possible image, so a pin-less scan does require some post-processing to improve image steadiness.

The ARRISCAN now presents an easy-to-use solution, an algorithm for on-the-fly stabilization that is implemented in the image processing pipeline: Hoverscan.

Hoverscan has been developed in close cooperation with the development team at HS-Art, famous for its DIAMANT-Film Restoration software, and will be previewed at NAB this year.

With the ARRI 35 mm Archive Gate and 35 mm Wet Gate, the scanning window is wide enough to see (and scan) the perforations. When using Hoverscan, the operator needs only to set a reference image; the software then examines all perforations and shifts each scanned frame to fit that reference image. This shift is absolutely lossless, since the algorithm is implemented directly in the ARRISCAN image processing pipeline and works on the 3K (6K) images before they are down-sampled or saved out to disk.

To avoid images being cut by unwanted shifts, the Hoverscan pastes them on a black frame, within which the images can 'hover', safe from being cropped. The black frame can be removed once the images have been checked and the stabilization confirmed. In situations where no perforation can be detected on an individual frame (perhaps because there aren't any perforations left) no shift will be initiated.

The stabilization histogram is a way for the user to tell how the stabilization performed. It incorporates two curves, one representing the X-Axis correction data, another representing the Y- Axis correction data. Both curves can be toggled and viewed independently. It also incorporates a color-coded background, representing the matching confidence. A good matching confidence is signified by a green color, while bad matching confidence is signified by an orange color.

But what to do with image frames that could not be stabilized properly and are marked with an orange color? DustBuster+ LT, a software solution developed by HS-Art, is part of the Hoverscan package; instead of rendering the whole sequence again, the operator can simply shift the frames in question manually to match the reference frame.

With this latest tool, the ARRISCAN system once again sets the industry standard, supporting clients by increasing the efficiency of their workflows and offering solutions for all motion picture scanning, archive and restoration applications.

Hoverscan will be released at the end of June 2012. It is suitable for all ARRISCANs with a 35 mm Archive Gate or 35 mm Wet Gate.
