Illumination Dynamics & ESPN honor vets

Illumination Dynamics (ID) and ARRI Film and TV recently partnered for the second time to support the eight-hour ESPN SportsCenter special AMERICAN'S HEROES: A SALUTE TO OUR VETERANS at Ramstein Air Base in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The Veterans Day event required ID and ARRI Film and TV in Munich to provide lighting, grip and technicians for the live telecast. The show was staged inside an air base hanger while the 2012 Armed Forces Classic Basketball Game was held in another hanger. "It's great to be able to come half way around the world and be supported by ARRI with great service and equipment, since it is the same gear we use and own in the States to light similar shows. It makes the journey that much easier," explains Rich Williams, ID’s Director of Broadcast Services.

Working with Carlton Young, Head of Remote Studio Shows at ESPN, the crew and ESPN were happy to honor veterans on this special day by literally putting the military in the spotlight. ARRI lighting fixtures were employed to illuminate the show throughout the broadcast. M40s lit a C130 Hercules plane that was parked on the tarmac. Notes Williams, "I always like seeing the reaction of directors and producers when we light something like a C130 aircraft with the M40 PAR and they don't believe we could do it with only two fixtures."

Inside, M18s were used to key the talent. An ARRI LoCaster for a remote “stand-up” in the base air tower was also utilized. The audience of airmen were lit by a collection of 1200 PARs, 575 PARs and 1K Fresnels.

“Being part of an endeavor such as this that showcases and recognizes U.S. veterans is truly something to be proud of,” says Williams.

Illumination Dynamics, an ARRI Group Company, has locations on both the West Coast (San Fernando, Calif., near Los Angeles) and the East Coast (Charlotte, North Carolina) to serve productions of all sizes.
