ARRI at Camerimage 2015
ARRI returned to Bydgoszcz, Poland in November for the 23rd Camerimage International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography, sponsoring the event as a strategic partner and hosting a series of workshops, presentations and social engagements. More than 90% of the feature films nominated in the main competition were shot with ARRI cameras; 57% were captured with ALEXA and exactly half made use of ARRI lenses.
At the 23rd Camerimage International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography in Bydgoszcz, Poland, ARRI speaks with Sturla Brandth Grøvlen, DP of Grímur Hákonarson’s RAMS, which won the Silver Frog award.
In the main competition the Golden Frog was awarded to cinematographer Ed Lachman ASC for his work with ARRIFLEX 416 cameras and Ultra 16 lenses (supplied by ARRI Rental U.S.) on the Todd Haynes film CAROL, set in 1950s New York City and starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. The Silver Frog went to Sturla Brandth Grøvlen DFF for Grímur Hákonarson's RAMS, captured with ALEXA and anamorphic lenses, while Mátyás Erdély HSC picked up the Bronze Frog for László Nemes' SON OF SAUL, on which he combined ARRICAM and ARRIFLEX 235 cameras with Master Prime lenses.
The fact that three different formats were used for the top prize-winning movies -- 16 mm film, 35 mm digital and 35 mm film -- illustrates the reality that cinematographers want a broad range of tools at their disposal. ARRI is unique in offering so many different formats and image recording options, enabling filmmakers to select the right camera system for each project.

Other winners to use ARRI cameras included Luis Urquiza Mondragon's PERFECT OBEDIENCE in the Director's Debut competition (shot with ARRIFLEX 416 cameras by Serguei Saldívar Tanaka), Chloe Zhao's SONGS MY BROTHERS TAUGHT ME in the Cinematographer's Debut competition (captured with ALEXA by Joshua James Richards), Juan Antonio Bayona's PENNY DREADFUL: NIGHT WORK in the First Look - TV Pilots competition (captured with ALEXA by Xavi Gimenez) and KENDRICK LAMAR -- ALRIGHT in two music video categories (directed by Colin Tilley and captured with AMIRA by Rob Witt).
During the festival ARRI grabbed video interviews with some of the cinematographers who dropped by; these were award-winners Sturla Brandth Grøvlen and Mátyás Erdély, but also nominees Yves Bélanger CSC, who shot BROOKLYN with ALEXA and Master Primes, and Edu Grau AEC, who combined ARRIFLEX 416 and ALEXA cameras on SUFFRAGETTE.

ARRI's workshops at Camerimage 2015 were extremely well attended. British cinematographer Oliver Stapleton BSC presented a workshop that focused on lighting and shooting a studio-based exterior set. Calling on volunteers from the audience, Stapleton demonstrated different ways to tackle a scene, making frequent use of ARRI SkyPanel LED soft lights that were provided through the support of Pinewood MBS Lighting.
Katya Nelhams-Wright and Emma Boswell of The Helicopter Girls broke free of the shackles of the classroom in their seminar by taking everyone outside and dramatically demonstrating the use of an ALEXA Mini camera on a Freefly MōVI M15 gimbal and Vulcan Raven X8 aerial drone. Braving strong winds, they flew the Mini high above the river outside the Opera Nova festival center, capturing shots of two actors on a bridge.

Showcasing the company's latest technological innovations, the ARRI Big Screen Experience provided an overview of upcoming products such as the ALEXA SXT cameras, as well as the rich variety of productions using ALEXA and AMIRA. The presentation included an update on ARRI Rental's ALEXA 65 camera system, which was launched at Camerimage last year and has since been utilized by the world's leading cinematographers on a wide range of high-profile movies.
Guests on stage at the Big Screen included Jérôme de Gerlache, who shared his experiences with AMIRA, and Ross Emery ACS, who discussed working with ALEXA on productions such as THE WOLVERINE, THE GIVER and WOMAN IN GOLD. In addition, Steve Howard and Darren Smith of Pinewood MBS Lighting described how major feature films including ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER'S WAR and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST have been making use of their fleet of SkyPanels.
Sincere thanks to everyone who came along to represent ARRI, and many congratulations to all of the winners and nominees. See you next year!
