TONI ERDMANN postproduces at ARRI Media
ARRI congratulations director Maren Ade, DP Patrick Orth, Komplizen Film and the entire team behind TONI ERDMANN for a whirlwind of positive reactions from the international film world, which gathered on the Côte d'Azur last week for the 69th Cannes Film Festival.
Director Maren Ade's father-daughter drama TONI ERDMANN was shot with ALEXA cameras from ARRI Rental by DP Patrick Orth. ARRI Media in Berlin provided postproduction services including online, grading, VFX and DCP creation.
TONI ERDMANN had its world premiere on May 14 as part of the main competition at Cannes 2016, and quickly became a frontrunner for the Palme d'Or. Maren Ade, whose previous credits include EVERYONE ELSE and THE FOREST FOR THE TREES, won over both the audience at the Croisette and the international press, which was full of praise. Several scenes were met with uproarious laughter and applause at the press screening and the premiere, bringing tears to many viewers' eyes. Later, critics hailed the father--daughter story as the long-awaited reinvigoration of German cinema.
The film was shot with ARRI ALEXA cameras and postproduction services including online, grading, VFX and DCP creation were handled by ARRI Media in Berlin. Patrick Orth, Maren Ade and senior colorist Philipp Orgassa worked together to create the look. After HEDI SCHNEIDER IS STUCK, from director Sonja Heiss, TONI ERDMANN is the second project that producers Janine Jakowski and Jonas Donrbach from Komplizen Film have completed at ARRI Media.
Peter Simonischek plays the lonely and eccentric father of his grown-up daughter, a career-driven management consultant based in Bucharest. During a surprise visit, he invades his daughter's work-dominated life and worlds collide: baby-boomer clashes with corporate climber, prankster with determined over-achiever. After beating an initial retreat, the father suddenly reappears in disguise as the fictional Toni Erdmann, turning his daughter's life upside-down. Sandra Hüller delivers a subtle but powerful performance, portraying a character driven from level-headedness to unbridled emotion.
Within days of its screening, distributors from numerous territories, including the United States and China, bought TONI ERDMANN. On May 20 it won the Fipresci Award.
