ARRILASER

The ARRILASER bridges the worlds of digital film restoration, analog film projection and long-term archiving. Capable of making recordings with resolutions from PAL up to 6K, the ARRILASER can film-out onto intermediate, camera negative and black-and-white film stocks.

With its capacity to record images onto special separation film stocks, the ARRILASER enables ‘separation mastering’ to preserve feature film and TV production content for future generations, even if it has been shot digitally. Film remains the most proven long-term image storage solution, with modern film stocks capable of surviving 500 years under the right conditions.

Basics of Laser Recording

Light Sources
Three solid state lasers are used in the ARRILASER, as they have a perfect Gaussian beam shape, very high life expectation, minimum size and minimum power consumption.

Light Modulation

For each color channel there is one AOM (Acousto Optical Modulator) in place that allows the constant light output of the laser to be modulated according to the color information of each pixel of every digital image. To allow for best possible image quality the modulation is done in 16 bit.

Film Transport and Deflection System
The mechanical deflection system in the ARRILASER is composed of:

  • A rotating spindle holding a single
    deflecting mirror

    The axle of the spindle runs in a dynamic air bearing and has no contact with stationary parts. An air compressor ensures that the spindle is always running at a constant air pressure.
  • An ultra precision linear stage
    The only moving part is the stage. An ultra-precision linear induction motor moves the stage through direct magnetic induction without any additional moving parts like gears etc.
  • A film stage with pin registration
    The ARRILASER film transport system is specially designed for high quality film recording. The pin registration (Bell & Howell standard) used in the ARRILASER generates an excellent steadiness (<20 μm). To transport the film during recording or for winding, there is a sprocket wheel  on the stage. This allows switching between 2-, 3- and 4-perf recording without any hardware change.

Image Quality

  • Picture Geometry
    The linear stage and the deflecting mirror produce perfect straight lines in both directions. Position and size of the image are arbitrarily adjustable. Factory default setting is a tolerance of less than 20 μm.
  • Flare
    In the ARRILASER a perfectly shaped laser beam is depicted on the film without any flare.
  • Color Landing, Convergence
    The three lasers are adjusted to match perfectly on one spot. Thus the color convergence of the whole image is perfectly adjusted.
  • Dynamic Range
    The ARRILASER achieves 2.046 status M densities and more above base for any available intermediate film stock, without compromise in image quality or recording speed.

 

New Operating Software

The Trillian Software package offers a new range of possibilites.

ARRILASER Software Interface
The ARRILASER 2 software interface, called Trillian, offers unprecedented flexibility of operation and is itself capable of speeding up daily operations. Trillian's main advantage is its ability to control and operate multiple lasers with the ease of just one application.

Job Editor
A single, centralized job database allows multiple reel recording with just one click and greatly simplifies both job and calibration management. The new job editor allows easier access to recording jobs and also permits greater control of all image processing options.




ImageBooster

The existing ARRILASER image processing engine is being replaced by the new ARRILASER 2 Image Booster software that is also used in the ARRISCAN film scanner. The Image Booster utilizes not only the Host PC's CPU (Computer Processing Unit), but also - in line with the latest developments - permits rendering to be carried out entirely with the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit).




Image Viewer

A new image viewer with A/B comparison fully visualizes the image manipulation to avoid any unpleasant surprises after a recording has finished.




Status Monitor
The status monitor allows everyone involved to have a constant overview of the progress of each individual recorder. There is no need to install any software to access the status monitor as it is simply an HTML broadcast and therefore runs on any internet browser that has access to the company's network.

Trillian 3D LUT Node
ARRILASER 3D LUT Loader
This enables the ARRILASER Trillian to load any customized 3D LUT in a described format and to utilize the ARRICUBE Creator video-to-film 3D LUTs. The 3D LUT will be applied on-the-fly during the recording process.

Universal Color Management for Video to Film
The Trillian ARRICUBE node provides universal 3D LUTs for recording video images onto film and applying them to the images on-the-fly during the recording process. ARRICUBE packages contain 3D LUTs for all negative-print combinations of EK 5242/Fuji 8511 and EK 2383/Fuji CP 3510.

Recording 1920 Pixel Per Line
This software plug-in allows recording of native 1920 pixel per line (HD format) across the full aperture or academy area of the film without any rescaling.
 
Auto Geometry / Pitch Module
Recording any Pixel Number without Rescaling
This software plug-in calculates the pitch based on the image pixel size and the recorded image size. Therefore any number of pixels in a certain range can be recorded without any digital rescaling.
 
3-Perforation Module

This allows the ARRILASER to generate a 3-perf negative with 3-perforation height images.
