- ARRIMAX 12/18
With one of the most original concepts of any of this summer's movies, Inception has perhaps unsurprisingly proven to be another critically acclaimed and box office success for director Christopher Nolan. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as an expert who can invade other people's dreams, allowing him to steal secrets or in this case, plant an idea as a form of corporate espionage. Nolan teamed up with longtime cinematographer Wally Pfister, ASC to shoot in Los Angeles, Europe, Japan and Morocco with an international cast including Michael Caine, Ken Watanabe, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy.
Chief lighting technician Cory Geryak and assistant chief lighting technician Larry Sushinski, who both collaborated on Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, were also on board for the making of Inception. Knowing the scale of the task in hand, they turned to the ARRIMAX 18/12 HMI lamphead and its automated stirrup - the MaxMover to meet the lighting needs of Nolan's uncompromising vision.
The ARRIMAX is the ultimate choice for productions requiring maximum light output. Combining the variable beam spread of a Fresnel with the light output of a PAR, the ARRIMAX uses a unique reflector concept for beam control that eliminates the need for spread lenses.
One particular scene that took advantage of the sheer power of the ARRIMAX and the delicate control of the MaxMover was set in a hideout where the team plans its heist. Shot in downtown Los Angeles, the scene made use of multiple ARRIMAX lampheads blasting though windows from outside, requiring no less than 15 ARRI MaxMovers.
The ARRI MaxMover offers remote pan, tilt and focus for large lighting fixtures and can be mounted on boom arms, tall platforms or in hard-to-reach positions. These fixtures can then be operated safely and conveniently from the ground using a simple analog or optional DMX (wired or wireless) control.
